About the Author

Jim Fiume was born an orphan in the lates 1940s in Lyncourt, New York. In his memoir, Born A Burden: The Story of an American Orphan, he explains how he learned survival skills while being tossed between an orphanage, resentful family members, a greedy foster care family, and eventually into the streets. In order to live the life he always knew was waiting for him, he took each lesson acquired by his tribulations and used them to his advantage. Although he faced hardship at every turn while growing up, Jim managed to make the most of his experiences, good or bad. With his memoir, Jim shares his personal story in order to help others who may also have been raised under similar circumstances. It is his hope that from his life experiences, they can understand that no matter how bad things are, there is always something better waiting. Fiume currently resides with his wife in Houston, Texas.

  • A place of no mercy, no coddling, and no emotion, the streets of New York don’t waiver in their inability to care for anyone. In order to survive, you have to take the lessons that are given to you by them and use them to your advantage. After being orphaned not once, but twice, raised by nuns, foster parents, and passed between the homes of his grandmother and father, Jim Fiume learned how to survive and thrive after being tossed aside.

His experiences led him to where he is now and helped give him wisdom that can only be gained from the university of the streets. Based on the life of Jim Fiume, the experiences from his childhood, adolescence, and a once-in-a-lifetime road trip down Route 66 are recounted in order to teach the one kind of lesson that can never be learned in a classroom… how to be street smart.
